Does BUP Show Up On a Drug Test?

Uritox

BUP (semi-synthetic opioid) is a medication prescribed to individuals who are addicted or dependent on opioid drugs. BUP helps relieve withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, insomnia, agitation, etc. It is less addictive and the risk of overdose is low. The BUP effects last for approximately three days.

BUP is sold under different trade names in the form of tablets and patches, and these drugs are used in different stages of addiction treatment process as well as for maintenance treatment. Some of the side effects of BUP include nausea, headaches, flu-like symptoms, sweating, mood swings, etc. BUP taken in combination with alcohol or CNS depressants may induce severe breathing problems.

BUP drugs are classified as Schedule III with a moderate to low physical dependence, but may potentially have high psychological dependence.

BUP drug tests are frequently administered in individuals while recovering from opioid drug disorder to monitor sobriety.

Does BUP Show Up On a Drug Test?

Yes, BUP shows up on a drug test. BUP has a different metabolite that is not found in the most commonly abused opioids. Method of testing used to detect BUP is urine, blood, saliva and hair.

  •   This is the most commonly used type of testing method since it is easy to administer and inexpensive. BUP can be detected within less than an hour in the urine and for up to 6 days after last dose. It can be detected even up to 2 weeks in heavy users.
  • Blood:  Since blood tests are invasive and expensive, they are less frequently administered. BUP can be detected mostly within 2 to 12 hours after the last use and up to 2 days. Blood test has a shorter detection period; hence it is administered relatively quickly after the user has taken the last dose.
  • Saliva:  This test is easy to use and noninvasive, and has a slightly longer detection period than blood tests. Saliva test can detect BUP within a few minutes of ingestion. BUP can be detected in the saliva for up to 3 to 10 days after usage of the medication.
  • Hair:  There are research studies that BUP metabolites can be found in hair samples. Since the hair follicle testing has a longer detection window, BUP can be detected in the hair specimens for up to 3 months after the last usage.

Since BUP is frequently used to prevent withdrawal symptoms from opioid misuse, it is crucial for the labs to differentiate between the prescribed BUP use and over-the-counter opioid use.

How Long Does BUP Stay in Your System?

BUP is a partial agonist that activates the opioid receptors in the brain, leading to reduction in opiate withdrawal symptoms. This drug helps in avoiding the euphoric effects of opioid drugs by fulfilling the brain’s need for opioid.

After ingestion of BUP, it gets absorbed into the bloodstream. The liver breaks it down and releases it back into the bloodstream. The kidneys filter it and excrete it through urine.

The detection period for BUP varies from person to person and a variety of factors affect including:

  • Age
  • Height and weight
  • Amount of BUP taken
  • Frequency of drug use
  • Fat content in the body
  • Liver function
  • Overall physical and mental health
  • Rate of metabolism
  • Time between the drug test and the BUP use

False Positive Testing

Immunoassay is the most commonly used method of detection that can give false-positive drug test results. There are several medications that can trigger a false-positive result for BUP. These false positives are confirmed with second independent testing method such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) or liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) to identify specific drugs of use.

It is highly recommended to disclose if you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications so that the clinicians can accurately interpret the drug testing results.

Clearing BUP Out of Your System

BUP is not screened as part of any standard panel, but if needed, it can be specifically tested such as in case of suspicion or clinical settings.

If you want to eliminate BUP out of your system, you need to first stop the medication under the appropriate guidance of your physician. Stopping this medication abruptly will lead to withdrawal symptoms.

You can also try to speed up your body metabolic rate by following healthy eating habits, regular exercise and drinking plenty of water.

Drug Interactions

  • Many drugs are known to interact with BUP and cause severe side effects. You must inform your physician in case you are taking any other drug(s) for any medical condition(s) before starting BUP.
  • Consuming alcohol or other antidepressants along with BUP may induce severe breathing problems as well as make you drowsy and dizzy.
  • Older people may experience more side effects such as drowsiness, shallow breathing, confusion, etc.
  • Misuse of BUP can be fatal leading to death.

Summary

BUP is a semi-synthetic opioid typically used to treat opioid dependence disorders. It helps people in slowly tapering off the dose, and also aids in minimizing or eliminating symptoms of withdrawal and cravings.

Being an opioid, BUP can still be abused to get the euphoric feeling. It won’t have an effect on people who are already addicted to opioids and have developed a tolerance. People who have never used any opioids may be susceptible to getting dependent on any of the BUP formulations.

BUP is not specifically tested as part of any standard employment drug testing. If you are undergoing treatment for opioid dependence, it might mimic other opioid substance and show up on the drug test panel. In such cases, you can divulge your prescription to the tester before taking the test.

Typically, BUP can be detected for 7 to 10 days and can vary according to a person’s individual factors such as age, weight, height, metabolism rate, amount of drug used and frequency, etc.

One should avoid taking BUP with any other medications, alcohol or antidepressants since it can increase or lead to severe adverse effects and can be fatal at times.

How to use the Drug Test Kit

  • After collecting urine sample, remove the instant drug test from the foil pouch.
  • Remove the cap from the end of the test and use it to gently bend the exposed strip back and forth to repair them for urine absorption.
  • Dip the exposed strip into the urine sample making sure the urine does not come in contact with the plastic portion of the testing panel.
  • The strip should remain in the urine for 10 to 15 seconds.
  • Recap the urine test and lay down on a flat surface.
  • Red lines will begin to appear on the result window almost immediately; however, the results should only be interpreted at 5 minutes.
  • How to Read Drug Test Results

Please make sure to read the results within 5 to 10 minutes.  Do not read after 10 minutes since the results will be invalid.

    • On the testing panel, a red line will appear next to the Control Line (C).  This shows the test is working and has plenty of urine to perform correctly.
    • A red line next to the Test Line (T) shows the test is negative for the corresponding drug listed above.
    • If there is no red line next to the Test Line (T), then the donor is positive for the corresponding drug listed above.
    • If the testing window has no lines present and does not appear as though the urine has wiped up the sample window, you may try to remove the cap and re-dip the strip again in the urine for 10 to 15 seconds, recap the test and lay down on a flat surface.  At this point if the red line appears next to the Control Line (C), then the kit is working.
    • If no lines appear even after second attempt, then it is Invalid.  You can contact the manufacturer.

This screening device will provide only qualitative result.  All positives should be confirmed by an alternative method such as GC/MS (gas chromatography/mass spectrometry), which can only be performed by a drug testing laboratory.
